RTLS Leverages Data and Analytics to Enhance Efficiency and Drive Financial Returns | SaaS for Healthcare

Submitted byRobert Peed on

Healthcare organizations generate huge amounts of data at a pace that is expected to only accelerate.[1] While clinical data analytics are common, tools that can help optimize operational workflows are where a modern Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS), such as Awarepoint, are unique. Awarepoint captures location, movement and interactions of people and mobile equipment, but it also draws conclusions about the current state of patients and helps drive appropriate next steps, gathering the personnel required to take those steps at the right time.

That insight allows providers and administrators to streamline workflows and implement other changes to improve productivity, increase patient volume and reduce overtime costs, often delivering a much faster and sustained ROI than clinical data analysis alone.

How RTLS analytics drives OR efficiency
A hospital’s surgical admissions can generate nearly half its annual revenue, but many factors can negatively impact fiscal performance and patient satisfaction: for example, delays in case start times, turnover rates and inefficient supply chain.

An OR suite is an ideal example of how RTLS data combined with analytics and business intelligence tools can drive efficiency. The RTLS collects data as it tracks the location and interaction of patients and providers involved in a procedure. Through its analytics engine, the technology interprets and presents progress toward surgical milestones for the current surgical case, eliminating obstacles and automatically contacting providers at the right time to reduce delays and wait times.

Thanks to this insight, Awarepoint clients have added to 1 to 2 cases per day, without increasing staff, while OR turnaround time had decreased from 15 to 25 percent. Likewise, patient satisfaction, which now directly impacts hospital revenue, has also improved after Awarepoint RTLS implementations due to improved communication with providers and fewer delays.

Driving action through data analysis
Alerting housekeeping about a vacant OR suite is just one of the many actions RTLS can initiate based on its sophisticated analytics engine. For example, the technology can auto-assign an ED nurse to a patient if the clinician spends more than 120 seconds in a room, and then send a message to the ED system.

Roadblocks to care progression are also automatically identified and, based on a best practice workflow, appropriate staff notifications are sent to help speed resolution. As a result, Awarepoint clients have experienced efficiency benefits such as an 80 percent reduction of case-related phone calls and improved timeliness of IV antibiotics by 25 to 50 percent.

Maximizing benefit through retrospective analysis
RTLS offers more than just real-time analytics and workflow enhancement tools at the point-of-care. Department managers can take advantage of retrospective analytics for generating reports on any almost any asset, patient flow or workflow metric to assist in making ongoing changes for continuous performance improvement.

Awarepoint can assist in this regard because it is a fully managed service, which includes a full-time on-site system owner during and after implementation to ensure early and sustained achievement of operational improvements, but also of ROI and clinical goals.
