Awards recognize innovation, insight, impact and initiative in wireless and mobile health sectors

SAN DIEGO, Calif., April 26, 2012 –Awarepoint Corporation, the leading provider of real-time location system (RTLS) solutions for healthcare, today announced it is one of a dozen finalists for the Fourth Annual TripleTree iAwards for Wireless Health. The prestigious iAwards, which are offered in three categories by Triple Tree LLC, an independent investment banking firm, recognize companies for demonstrating innovation, insight and initiative in wireless and mobile health.

A distinguished panel of judges, including representatives from Triple Tree, Wireless Life Sciences Alliance (WLSA) and Cooley LLP, selected the 12 finalists after reviewing more than 160 applications. Awarepoint was among four finalists in the category of operational effectiveness, e.g., having the best solution for reducing costs and improving operational efficiency. The remaining eight finalists are nominated in the categories of clinical application and consumer experience. Applicants were judged based on the uniqueness of their business model, growth and traction in the marketplace, clinical/operational/consumer relevance, market size, international presence or potential, and other fundamentals.

“The iAwards provides recognition for companies like Awarepoint that are addressing healthcare problems with innovative mobile and wireless solutions,” said John Montague, vice president of Triple Tree. “We congratulate the finalists and wish them the best of luck in the final round.”

Awarepoint serves 123 healthcare systems representing 186 sites in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia that are using its aware360°Suite of solutions. The RTLS application enables clients − 46 percent of whom are recognized by US News & World Report as America’s best hospitals – to quickly improve financial, operational and other efficiencies. Awarepoint clients using the application to track mobile assets on average save $250,000 in one-time, planned equipment capital purchases; $100,000 in annual rental equipment costs; and $50,000 in annual equipment replacement costs due to loss or theft.

The system also has enabled:

Nurses to save an average of 25 minutes per shift because they no longer have to spend time locating equipment, patients and physicians.

Hospitals to reduce patient wait times by an average of 70%, inpatient bed turnover times to one hour, reduce operating room (OR) bed turnover times to 30 minutes, add one additional OR case per day and increase emergency department patients by one to two cases daily.

Facilities to boost hand-hygiene compliance to nearly 100 percent, thus addressing a major cause of healthcare associated infections.

As a 2012 iAwards finalist, Awarepoint will be a featured presenter at the 7thannual WLSA Wireless Health Convergence Summit to be held May 23-24 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego. The winners of each iAwards category will be announced on May 24th at the conference, which attracts leading wireless health executives, innovators, thought leaders, and investors worldwide.

“We are honored to be a finalist in TripleTree’s iAwards,” states Jay Deady, CEO of Awarepoint. “This recognition is a testament to the industry leadership, success and power of our aware360° Suite. We look forward to demonstrating our solution to the world’s premier healthcare executives at the WLSA Wireless Health Convergence Summit.”

SAN DIEGO, Calif., April 16, 2012 – A new podcast featuring guest interviewee Jay Deady, CEO of Awarepoint Corporation, makes the case that real-time location systems (RTLS) dramatically improves the quality and cost of care and delivers fast return on investment (ROI), making the technology a “no-brainer” for hospitals and health systems facing financial pressures and shifting to outcomes-based reimbursement. The interview, moderated by Doris Gilman, editor and publisher of Health Thought Leadership One-to-One, can be downloaded at http://seen-heard.com/blog/?p=1212.

In the 17-minute podcast, Deady reviews challenges associated with the inability of providers to track portable assets, physicians and nurses, and monitor the temperature of blood products and tissues. Deady further explains that these challenges lead to: patient care delays; inefficient use of nursing resources; unnecessary rentals and purchases of smart pumps, ventilators, specialty bed, wheel chairs and other items; and hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) that add financial liability.

“Nurses are spending anywhere from 30 to upwards of 65 minutes each shift looking for equipment to take care of patients,” Deady stated in the podcast. Moreover, he said, the average hospital owns almost 100 percent more mobile assets than it needs, while also renting equipment when assets are missing. The inefficient use of nurses and equipment rentals are negatively affecting care delivery, patient satisfaction and hospital finances.

“We come in and make an impact on that right away,” he said, adding that “Awarepoint’s combination of software, technology and services, speed of deployment, and a business model that holds the company accountable to clients for achieving a mutually agreed ROI target, sets it apart from the competition.”

Hospitals can go live on Awarepoint’s aware360°Suite of RTLS solutions in 29 to 45 days compared to 6 to 8 months on competing products, enabling them to realize faster ROI, Deady said. Awarepoint clients can achieve net positive cash flow within 3 to 5 months of deployment and save 2 to 3 times the cost of their technology investment just by eliminating rentals, unnecessary asset purchases and inefficient nursing utilization. They can further improve financial performance by using RTLS to increase patient throughput in areas such as surgery, and reduce HAIs by ensuring equipment is properly cleaned and sterilized before use.

The aware360°Suite also provides real-time actionable data that enable hospitals to continually improve quality and efficiency. Gilman was quite impressed with the Awarepoint value proposition and she questioned why only 15 percent of the nation’s hospitals are using the technology. “It would seem adopting a real-time location system such as that offered by Awarepoint is a no-brainer,” she commented.

Solution streamlines workflow and efficiency at world-renowned hospital

SAN DIEGO – February 22, 2012 – Awarepoint Corporation, the leading provider of real-time location system (RTLS) solutions for healthcare, announced today that NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital has successfully deployed its real-time location system at its Columbia University Medical Center campus to enhance workflow, quality of care, and patient satisfaction in perioperative areas of the internationally renowned hospital. Surgeons and staff at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, which operates one of the country’s busiest perioperative centers, are using the system.

“The successful go-live of awareSurgical at NewYork Presbyterian/Columbia marks a critical milestone as we strive to advance quality, efficiency, and care coordination to the next level while maximizing use of our electronic health records (EHR) and other mission-critical information systems,” said Aurelia Boyer, CIO at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. “The solution uses real-time information about the location of equipment 24 hours a day as well as a very sophisticated rules engine, user interface, and set of interfaces to other clinical systems to dramatically improve our communication and efficiency.”

Previously, NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, which integrated the Awarepoint awareSurgical application with its operating room (OR) scheduling and EHR software, found it challenging to coordinate patient care and communicate with each other because the surgery department physically was spread out across two different buildings and two separate floors. Another logistical issue was that each building had a separate perioperative area spanning the pre-operative, operative, and post-operative phases. This physical layout and large staff made patient flow, which is a major challenge for hospitals nationwide, even more complex.

When the hospital added eight more ORs, it needed a system that would organize and coordinate activities from registration to post-op so all parties would know what everyone else was doing. “Access to real-time location information has substantially improved daily communication and efficiency at our extremely busy and large OR,” said John C. Evanko, M.D., M.B.A., OR director at

NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia. “Within two months following implementation, Awarepoint’s technology enabled us to reduce perioperative telephone calls involving patients by more than 40 percent. RTLS helped streamline patient handoffs because it automatically notifies the next unit patients will be moved to when surgeries are completed. The system also notifies housekeeping that ORs need to be prepared for the next patient, optimizing utilization of the OR.”

The awareSurgical application NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia uses is part of Awarepoint’s aware360°Suite of RTLS-enabled solutions which translates real-time data into actionable intelligence. The application monitors location of patients, personnel, and assets. It runs that information and data from hospitals’ scheduling and EHR systems through a series of predefined rules based on the facility’s standard surgical workflow, and then sends a series of notifications to caregivers. In addition, a series of reports allow the hospital to identify bottlenecks in their procedures, providing them the information they need to make changes and improvements in their processes.

“The successful, large scale implementation of RTLS at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia further showcases our ability to collaborate closely with hospital IT departments, address their needs and install solutions in complex environments,” said Jay Deady, president and chief executive officer of Awarepoint. “As the market shifts to accountable care, hospitals nationwide need to be more efficient in order to remain competitive. By using and integrating RTLS with its EHR, NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia is setting a high standard for advanced use of technology to meet this goal. We are excited to work with NewYork-Presbyterian to realize their vision of providing the highest-quality care and improving operating efficiency.”

Live product demos and client case presentations to showcase how providers can enhance patient flow, increase efficiency, and improve asset management and availability

LAS VEGAS, HIMSS Conference, Booth 3412 – Feb. 21, 2012 – Awarepoint Corporation, the leading provider of real-time location system (RTLS) solutions for healthcare, today launched the new version of its aware360°Suite of real-time location system solutions at the HIMSS Annual Conference and Exhibition. Through live demonstrations and client case studies at booth #3412, the company will showcase aware360°Suite, the industry’s only complete RTLS solution that optimizes healthcare workflow, increases care team efficiency and improves asset management and availability.

“Today’s hospitals and health systems are asked to do more with less, yet the biggest revenue-generating departments – emergency, surgery, cardiovascular, and oncology – can all be adversely impacted by the lack of real-time visibility of critical assets,” said Jay Deady, president and CEO of Awarepoint. “It is becoming all too clear that the ineffective utilization of high-value assets has a significant negative effect on patient care, not to mention process workflow. That’s why we are excited to introduce the new version of our flagship solution at the healthcare technology industry’s premier conference. The aware360°Suite expands the visibility and management of facility assets to dramatically increase top-line revenue growth without compromising quality of care.”

Awarepoint’s aware360°Suite translates real-time data into actionable intelligence by enabling hospitals and health systems to monitor the location of patients, staff and assets. Users also can aggregate that information with their scheduling systems and electronic health records to improve operating efficiency, reduce costs, enhance equipment workflow and augment staff productivity across their enterprise.

Recent enhancements to the aware360°Suite allow administrators and care providers to advance the quality, efficiency, experience, and economics of healthcare. The aware360°Suite modules include:

awareAssets – enables organizations to locate and manage assets, monitor temperature and humidity, reduce shrinkage and rentals, increase equipment utilization, and track sterilization of instrument trays.

awarePatientCare – facilitates patient flow by expediting communication about the patient’s care plan and condition while supporting data analysis to drive process improvement.

awareCareTeam – improves communication and care coordination by simplifying the process of locating care team members and enhancing integration with third-party communication systems.

awareSurgical – measures location, movement and interactions between patients, staff and equipment to identify and communicate care milestones, help staff anticipate and manage their workflow, and streamline perioperative patient flow.

awareED – helps hospital staff visualize care progression of patients in the emergency department, simplifies access to patient information and improves ED throughput.

awareRadiology – leverages location tracking and workflow rules and interfaces with scheduling systems to move patients efficiently through their procedure.

awareHandHygiene – captures information and generates reports, enabling facilities to ensure hand hygiene compliance by physicians, nurses and other employees to reduce preventable infections caused poor hand washing and food handling practices.

Also being unveiled this week is Awarepoint’s bed-level accurate sensor, the S3B. “Ninety percent of all workflow milestones are driven by patient-staff interactions that occur at the bedside and the S3B allows us to detect those interactions with 100% certainty,” says Awarepoint’s CTO Matt Perkins. “Working in concert with our room-level accurate S2C workflow sensor, we can drive any aware360 Suit module and be confident that the care path is automated without error.” Awarepoint is wrapping up technical trials this quarter and expects to make the S3B generally available later this year.

Live booth demonstrations of Awarepoint’s aware360°Suite will be available throughout the conference showcasing how the solutions increase patient throughput and increase capacity management. In addition, exhibitors can register for a live demonstration with an Awarepoint representative for a chance to win an iPad 2.

On Wednesday, Feb. 22, attendees can attend in-booth presentations from Awarepoint clients. The presenters will describe how they were able to achieve unprecedented outcomes and hard return on investment. Lawrence Grossflam, director, clinical systems, New York Presbyterian Hospital will be speaking at 4:00 p.m. and Gregg Stepp, director, supply chain operations, Texoma Medical Center will be sharing his story at 4:45 p.m.

Brian Leader, vice president of the orthopedic service and perioperative services at LVHN, and James Miller, director of anesthesia services at Lehigh Valley Anesthesia Services, both in Allentown, Penn., will present “Using Real-time Patient and Resource Information to Analyze Workflow and Improve Perioperative Processes.” Their session will cover how RTLS provides actionable data to improve workflow, staff productivity, communication, quality of care, patient experience, and revenue in the perioperative areas including the operating room and post anesthesia care unit. The session will be held at booth #12442 on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012 at 4:45 p.m., and Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012 at 10:15 a.m.

The Intelligent Hospital will demonstrate how the integration of clinical systems, RFID (radio-frequency identification), RTLS, medical devices, and other technologies can be delivered and coordinated inside and outside a hospital using live OR and ED scenarios.

Awarepoint, a platinum sponsor of the Intelligent Hospital Pavilion, will demonstrate aware360°Suite of RTLS-enabled solutions, at booth #12442. The application helps providers manage and track assets, reduce equipment rental costs, monitor temperature, enhance hand hygiene compliance, and improve emergency and perioperative departmental, as well as enterprise-wide workflow and throughput. The results are lower operating costs, increased revenue, enhanced regulatory compliance, and improved patient satisfaction.

Awarepoint solution helps leading United Kingdom facility improve patient flow, equipment tracking,
and hand hygiene compliance

SAN DIEGO – February 16, 2012 – Awarepoint Corporation, the leading provider of real-time location system (RTLS) solutions for healthcare, announced today that The Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust (the Trust) in the United Kingdom has implemented the first phases of its real-time location system (RTLS) to improve patient flow, equipment tracking, and hand hygiene compliance. The RTLS data, as well as extensive data from other systems, is processed through the Awarepoint Rules Engine to help facilitate the flow of patients through the hospital, improving throughput times and creating a more healing environment.

“Like hospitals in other countries, we face the challenge of delivering the highest quality care at a time of severely constrained resources and staffing,” said David Loughton, chief executive of The Trust. “The enterprise-wide implementation of Awarepoint software gives us the ability to care for patients more quickly and provides staff with additional information they need to make decisions. Faster treatment and more efficient processes result in better outcomes and lower clinical, administrative, and operational costs.”

The Awarepoint system was first implemented in a ward of the hospital designed to handle injured and sick patients who also suffer from Dementia. The system quickly proved to provide staff with the critical information they needed to care for patients.

“The work Awarepoint did in conjunction with our new care standards for dementia patients was groundbreaking. We are committed to delivering the best and safest care possible. The work Awarepoint did with us shows that they are committed to the same standards. We look forward to partnering with Awarepoint as we move the system throughout the Trust,” said Loughton.

The aware360°Suite that the Trust installed translates real-time data into actionable intelligence. Awarepoint performed an extensive analysis of the Trust’s workflow and that workflow could then be mapped into the software. As the software received location data from the RTLS and additional data from other hospital systems, it processed that data against the workflow mapping. When specific types of care need to be provided to a patient, the system alerts the staff member responsible for the care. The software constantly monitors all patients in the 800-bed facility looking for events that caregivers need to know occurred. When those events occur, the caregivers are alerted. This constant monitoring and alerting allows care to be given in a more timely manner, resulting in shorter hospital stays and higher patient satisfaction.

“We are proud our technology is playing a crucial role in advancing the Trust’s vision of being a first-class hospital providing top quality and safe care in every way,” said Jay Deady, president and CEO of Awarepoint. “While most facilities typically apply RTLS to track and monitor the location of clinicians, patients and portable equipment, the Trust is utilizing the technology to its full range of capabilities, serving as an international and pioneering model for other organizations seeking to transform health delivery and financial outcomes through proven, leading edge software.

89 hospitals contract for Awarepoint software and technology platform in 2011 to improve patient throughput and flow, care team efficiency, and asset inventory management and availability

SAN DIEGO – Feb. 2, 2012 –Cementing its position as the leading provider of workflow optimization and location software for hospitals and medical office buildings, Awarepoint Corporation announced today that it signed a record 191 contracts with new and existing clients in 2011 for its aware360°Suite of RTLS-enabled healthcare solutions. These new contracts cover a total of 89 facilities which have implemented Awarepoint’s technology to improve clinical efficiency and quality, patient tracking, and operational and cost efficiencies. These contracts increased the number of customers to 123 healthcare systems, 186 hospital sites, and an industry-leading number of over 300,000 asset tags under management. Tags contracted are up 176% from 2010 and square foot coverage increased 55%.

Awarepoint’s record-setting year and strong momentum entering 2012 were propelled partly by the firm’s 2011 acquisition of Patient Care Technology Systems (PCTS) and reputation for superb service as reported in a recent KLAS report. The KLAS report indicated facilities that recently installed the Awarepoint solution reported a high level of satisfaction with Awarepoint’s implementation performance, awarding the company an average score of 91 out of 100 points. Jeff Silva, director of supply chain management at Banner Health, explains his satisfaction with Awarepoint: “As part of our ongoing commitment to deliver the highest quality of care, we selected the Awarepoint solution to help manage our large inventory of mobile assets. Since installing Awarepoint, locating medical equipment has become a simple task for our clinical staff and based on the current utilization metrics captured by the system, we have significantly reduced our planned equipment purchases for 2012.”

Jay Deady, president and CEO of Awarepoint, explains “We’ve experienced phenomenal demand in the last year for the aware360°Suite as hospitals and health systems recognize the imperative need to track patients, personnel, and medical equipment in real-time. RTLS enables them to accomplish that while streamlining workflow, addressing safety and regulatory compliance issues, reducing costs, and boosting revenue,” continues Deady. “The aware360°Suite is proving to be an essential tool in helping providers address the ongoing demands to provide higher quality, cost-effective care, and avoid Medicare reimbursement penalties for failing to comply with federal quality measures.”

The outstanding sales success and market demand for Awarepoint solutions was driven by the confidence clients have in the ability of the merged Awarepoint and PCTS entity to integrate and deliver solutions that enhance clinical, operational, and revenue performance. Jay Deady adds: “The results validate Awarepoint’s strategy to acquire PCTS and we look forward to continuing to meet providers’ needs by offering them the industry’s only complete solution for optimizing healthcare workflow and capacity management.”

Awarepoint’s aware360°Suite of RTLS-enabled solutions help hospital clients reduce hard operating costs, boost top-line revenues, and increase compliance management and patient satisfaction. Facilities have deployed Awarepoint’s patented technology and software platform to manage and track assets, reduce equipment rental costs, monitor temperature, enhance hand hygiene compliance, and improve emergency and perioperative departmental as well as enterprise-wide workflow and throughput.

Company received unprecedented 4 U.S. patents for real-time wireless location systems

SAN DIEGO – November 15, 2011 – Awarepoint Corporation, today announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has awarded the company four additional patents, which brings their total portfolio to 20 and bolsters the company’s position as the leading innovator of real-time wireless location systems (RTLS) for hospitals.

The new patents broadly cover Awarepoint’s most accurate mesh-based location algorithm to date, methods for detecting improperly sterilized medical equipment, and wireless technology architectures that drive enterprise wide visibility applications:

Patent No. 8,033,462 for a wireless tracking system and method of automatically determining if medical and surgical supplies and equipment have been properly sterilized, helping to improve patient safety and quality of care.

Patents No. 8,031,120 and 8,040,238 provide a process to enhance the detection of the exact location of hospital equipment and medical and surgical supplies.

Patent No. 8,041,369 describes multiple wireless technologies that precisely track hospital workflows, improve enterprise-wide visibility, and optimize revenue cycle management.

“Our latest patents protect the investment we’ve made in providing the best technology for our customers,” said Awarepoint Chief Technology Officer Matt Perkins, one of the inventors named in the patents. “Not only are we the most effective solution for driving enterprise workflow and enterprise visibility, but we continue to be the only company that has demonstrated tags that can survive a full sterilization cycle and alert on decontamination and sterilization violations prior to patient usage.”

“From the beginning, we recognized that a one-size-fits-all approach to RTLS technology would not work for hospitals,” Perkins said. “Our continuous innovation strategy enables us to deliver multiple technologies to meet our customers’ specific needs.”

About Awarepoint
Awarepoint is the world’s leading supplier of real-time location systems (RTLS) that hospitals use to track, monitor, and optimize the utilization and workflow of personnel, patients, and equipment.
