Solution streamlines workflow and efficiency at world-renowned hospital

SAN DIEGO – February 22, 2012 – Awarepoint Corporation, the leading provider of real-time location system (RTLS) solutions for healthcare, announced today that NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital has successfully deployed its real-time location system at its Columbia University Medical Center campus to enhance workflow, quality of care, and patient satisfaction in perioperative areas of the internationally renowned hospital. Surgeons and staff at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, which operates one of the country’s busiest perioperative centers, are using the system.

“The successful go-live of awareSurgical at NewYork Presbyterian/Columbia marks a critical milestone as we strive to advance quality, efficiency, and care coordination to the next level while maximizing use of our electronic health records (EHR) and other mission-critical information systems,” said Aurelia Boyer, CIO at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. “The solution uses real-time information about the location of equipment 24 hours a day as well as a very sophisticated rules engine, user interface, and set of interfaces to other clinical systems to dramatically improve our communication and efficiency.”

Previously, NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, which integrated the Awarepoint awareSurgical application with its operating room (OR) scheduling and EHR software, found it challenging to coordinate patient care and communicate with each other because the surgery department physically was spread out across two different buildings and two separate floors. Another logistical issue was that each building had a separate perioperative area spanning the pre-operative, operative, and post-operative phases. This physical layout and large staff made patient flow, which is a major challenge for hospitals nationwide, even more complex.

When the hospital added eight more ORs, it needed a system that would organize and coordinate activities from registration to post-op so all parties would know what everyone else was doing. “Access to real-time location information has substantially improved daily communication and efficiency at our extremely busy and large OR,” said John C. Evanko, M.D., M.B.A., OR director at

NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia. “Within two months following implementation, Awarepoint’s technology enabled us to reduce perioperative telephone calls involving patients by more than 40 percent. RTLS helped streamline patient handoffs because it automatically notifies the next unit patients will be moved to when surgeries are completed. The system also notifies housekeeping that ORs need to be prepared for the next patient, optimizing utilization of the OR.”

The awareSurgical application NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia uses is part of Awarepoint’s aware360°Suite of RTLS-enabled solutions which translates real-time data into actionable intelligence. The application monitors location of patients, personnel, and assets. It runs that information and data from hospitals’ scheduling and EHR systems through a series of predefined rules based on the facility’s standard surgical workflow, and then sends a series of notifications to caregivers. In addition, a series of reports allow the hospital to identify bottlenecks in their procedures, providing them the information they need to make changes and improvements in their processes.

“The successful, large scale implementation of RTLS at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia further showcases our ability to collaborate closely with hospital IT departments, address their needs and install solutions in complex environments,” said Jay Deady, president and chief executive officer of Awarepoint. “As the market shifts to accountable care, hospitals nationwide need to be more efficient in order to remain competitive. By using and integrating RTLS with its EHR, NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia is setting a high standard for advanced use of technology to meet this goal. We are excited to work with NewYork-Presbyterian to realize their vision of providing the highest-quality care and improving operating efficiency.”

Awarepoint solution helps leading United Kingdom facility improve patient flow, equipment tracking,
and hand hygiene compliance

SAN DIEGO – February 16, 2012 – Awarepoint Corporation, the leading provider of real-time location system (RTLS) solutions for healthcare, announced today that The Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust (the Trust) in the United Kingdom has implemented the first phases of its real-time location system (RTLS) to improve patient flow, equipment tracking, and hand hygiene compliance. The RTLS data, as well as extensive data from other systems, is processed through the Awarepoint Rules Engine to help facilitate the flow of patients through the hospital, improving throughput times and creating a more healing environment.

“Like hospitals in other countries, we face the challenge of delivering the highest quality care at a time of severely constrained resources and staffing,” said David Loughton, chief executive of The Trust. “The enterprise-wide implementation of Awarepoint software gives us the ability to care for patients more quickly and provides staff with additional information they need to make decisions. Faster treatment and more efficient processes result in better outcomes and lower clinical, administrative, and operational costs.”

The Awarepoint system was first implemented in a ward of the hospital designed to handle injured and sick patients who also suffer from Dementia. The system quickly proved to provide staff with the critical information they needed to care for patients.

“The work Awarepoint did in conjunction with our new care standards for dementia patients was groundbreaking. We are committed to delivering the best and safest care possible. The work Awarepoint did with us shows that they are committed to the same standards. We look forward to partnering with Awarepoint as we move the system throughout the Trust,” said Loughton.

The aware360°Suite that the Trust installed translates real-time data into actionable intelligence. Awarepoint performed an extensive analysis of the Trust’s workflow and that workflow could then be mapped into the software. As the software received location data from the RTLS and additional data from other hospital systems, it processed that data against the workflow mapping. When specific types of care need to be provided to a patient, the system alerts the staff member responsible for the care. The software constantly monitors all patients in the 800-bed facility looking for events that caregivers need to know occurred. When those events occur, the caregivers are alerted. This constant monitoring and alerting allows care to be given in a more timely manner, resulting in shorter hospital stays and higher patient satisfaction.

“We are proud our technology is playing a crucial role in advancing the Trust’s vision of being a first-class hospital providing top quality and safe care in every way,” said Jay Deady, president and CEO of Awarepoint. “While most facilities typically apply RTLS to track and monitor the location of clinicians, patients and portable equipment, the Trust is utilizing the technology to its full range of capabilities, serving as an international and pioneering model for other organizations seeking to transform health delivery and financial outcomes through proven, leading edge software.

About Awarepoint Corporation

89 hospitals contract for Awarepoint software and technology platform in 2011 to improve patient throughput and flow, care team efficiency, and asset inventory management and availability

SAN DIEGO – Feb. 2, 2012 –Cementing its position as the leading provider of workflow optimization and location software for hospitals and medical office buildings, Awarepoint Corporation announced today that it signed a record 191 contracts with new and existing clients in 2011 for its aware360°Suite of RTLS-enabled healthcare solutions. These new contracts cover a total of 89 facilities which have implemented Awarepoint’s technology to improve clinical efficiency and quality, patient tracking, and operational and cost efficiencies. These contracts increased the number of customers to 123 healthcare systems, 186 hospital sites, and an industry-leading number of over 300,000 asset tags under management. Tags contracted are up 176% from 2010 and square foot coverage increased 55%.

Awarepoint’s record-setting year and strong momentum entering 2012 were propelled partly by the firm’s 2011 acquisition of Patient Care Technology Systems (PCTS) and reputation for superb service as reported in a recent KLAS report. The KLAS report indicated facilities that recently installed the Awarepoint solution reported a high level of satisfaction with Awarepoint’s implementation performance, awarding the company an average score of 91 out of 100 points. Jeff Silva, director of supply chain management at Banner Health, explains his satisfaction with Awarepoint: “As part of our ongoing commitment to deliver the highest quality of care, we selected the Awarepoint solution to help manage our large inventory of mobile assets. Since installing Awarepoint, locating medical equipment has become a simple task for our clinical staff and based on the current utilization metrics captured by the system, we have significantly reduced our planned equipment purchases for 2012.”

Jay Deady, president and CEO of Awarepoint, explains “We’ve experienced phenomenal demand in the last year for the aware360°Suite as hospitals and health systems recognize the imperative need to track patients, personnel, and medical equipment in real-time. RTLS enables them to accomplish that while streamlining workflow, addressing safety and regulatory compliance issues, reducing costs, and boosting revenue,” continues Deady. “The aware360°Suite is proving to be an essential tool in helping providers address the ongoing demands to provide higher quality, cost-effective care, and avoid Medicare reimbursement penalties for failing to comply with federal quality measures.”

The outstanding sales success and market demand for Awarepoint solutions was driven by the confidence clients have in the ability of the merged Awarepoint and PCTS entity to integrate and deliver solutions that enhance clinical, operational, and revenue performance. Jay Deady adds: “The results validate Awarepoint’s strategy to acquire PCTS and we look forward to continuing to meet providers’ needs by offering them the industry’s only complete solution for optimizing healthcare workflow and capacity management.”

Awarepoint’s aware360°Suite of RTLS-enabled solutions help hospital clients reduce hard operating costs, boost top-line revenues, and increase compliance management and patient satisfaction. Facilities have deployed Awarepoint’s patented technology and software platform to manage and track assets, reduce equipment rental costs, monitor temperature, enhance hand hygiene compliance, and improve emergency and perioperative departmental as well as enterprise-wide workflow and throughput.

Company received unprecedented 4 U.S. patents for real-time wireless location systems

SAN DIEGO – November 15, 2011 – Awarepoint Corporation, today announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has awarded the company four additional patents, which brings their total portfolio to 20 and bolsters the company’s position as the leading innovator of real-time wireless location systems (RTLS) for hospitals.

The new patents broadly cover Awarepoint’s most accurate mesh-based location algorithm to date, methods for detecting improperly sterilized medical equipment, and wireless technology architectures that drive enterprise wide visibility applications:

Patent No. 8,033,462 for a wireless tracking system and method of automatically determining if medical and surgical supplies and equipment have been properly sterilized, helping to improve patient safety and quality of care.

Patents No. 8,031,120 and 8,040,238 provide a process to enhance the detection of the exact location of hospital equipment and medical and surgical supplies.

Patent No. 8,041,369 describes multiple wireless technologies that precisely track hospital workflows, improve enterprise-wide visibility, and optimize revenue cycle management.

“Our latest patents protect the investment we’ve made in providing the best technology for our customers,” said Awarepoint Chief Technology Officer Matt Perkins, one of the inventors named in the patents. “Not only are we the most effective solution for driving enterprise workflow and enterprise visibility, but we continue to be the only company that has demonstrated tags that can survive a full sterilization cycle and alert on decontamination and sterilization violations prior to patient usage.”

“From the beginning, we recognized that a one-size-fits-all approach to RTLS technology would not work for hospitals,” Perkins said. “Our continuous innovation strategy enables us to deliver multiple technologies to meet our customers’ specific needs.”

About Awarepoint
Awarepoint is the world’s leading supplier of real-time location systems (RTLS) that hospitals use to track, monitor, and optimize the utilization and workflow of personnel, patients, and equipment.

Monongahela Valley Hospital first to deploy combined solution to drive increased ED throughput and efficiencies.

SAN DIEGO – October 14, 2011 – Awarepoint Corporation, the leading provider of real-time location system (RTLS) enabled solutions for health care, and MEDITECH, a leading supplier of Health Care Information Systems (HCIS), today announced a collaboration to integrate technologies to provide emergency departments (EDs) with real-time patient location and critical milestone tracking within MEDITECH’s enterprise-wide electronic health record (EHR) software. Western, PA-based Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH), a 210-bed facility, is the first hospital in the country to deploy the integrated solution to improve quality of care, workflow, safety, efficiency and productivity.

“This is a great enhancement for our patients and staff,” said Louis J. Panza Jr., president and CEO of Monongahela Valley Hospital. “We can now automatically transmit the location of every patient in our ED in real time from awareED to MEDITECH HCIS. The integration of these two technologies is improving data accuracy and increasing the efficiency and productivity of our staff.”

Using the combined solution, each patient in the ED is registered in MEDITECH and assigned a patient locating tag number which triggers Awarepoint’s awareED – built on the pioneering aware360°Platform – to track and report the location of the patient as well as record patient/staff interactions. When a patient changes location, or is transferred to another room, awareED communicates the patient location in real-time to MEDITECH so hospital staff can view accurate patient locations on MEDITECH EDM’s big screen tracking grid and workstation status views.

awareED is part of Awarepoint’s aware360°Suite of RTLS-enabled solutions, which are designed to help hospitals track patients, personnel and assets enterprise-wide, automate workflow, streamline emergency and perioperative departmental throughput, monitor temperature, and ensure hand hygiene compliance. Clients consistently achieve significant outcome improvements in wait time reductions, departure without service reductions, increased patient throughput volume improvements and top-line revenue improvements.

Awarepoint will be in MEDITECH’s booth (#1739) at the 2011 American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Scientific Assembly Conference, October 15-18, in San Francisco to promote the integrated solution.
