RFID Asset Tracking
Radio frequency identification (RFID) systems include both passive and active solutions. Active RFID asset management differs significantly from passive RFID asset tracking.
In a passive system, RFID asset tracking tags do not have their own power supply. These RFID asset tracing tags are detected only when transitioning through areas where readers are installed. These types of RFID asset tracking systems use short-range readers and are typically used in supply chain management to improve inventory tracking and management.
Conversely, active RFID asset management uses battery operated tags. Signals from the active RFID asset tracking tags are used for real-time locating of equipment and people. The Awarepoint real-time location system delivers active RFID asset tracking using small battery-powered asset tags along with a patented plug-in sensors based on underlying ZigBee mesh network technology.
With Awarepoint, RFID asset tracking sensors are simply plugged in to standard electrical outlets to form the Awarenet® mesh network. RFID asset tracking tags are attached to equipment or people and users can track their location, status and movement in real-time from any web-enabled computer using the Searchpoint™ search engine. Awarepoint RFID asset tracking tags actively initiate location updates for real-time RFID asset management. Where passive RFID asset tracking systems require a scanner or reader to detect and locate items, the Awarepoint real-time location system (RTLS) updates automatically and continuously.
The Awarepoint RFID asset tracking system can be installed anywhere in your facility without disruption, even in occupied patient rooms and sterile areas, offering the quickest, most economical and least disruptive installation available to hospitals and medical centers.
